Brett Parker, U.S. Marine

Enlisting. Not just enlisting. Enlisting in the Marines. Wow.

When we heard about you signing up, Julie and I began remembering friends who are in the Corps. I had a high school friend join the Marine Reserve right after graduation who's a Staff Sergeant now. I still remember how much I worried about him during boot camp at Camp Pendleton, and then being away from home in Tennessee and Colorado during his studies. That was in the late 80's, when the military was quiet, shall we say. The one thing he always wrote in his letters was, They can only do so much to you. I never quite understood what he meant by that, but maybe you will once you're in.

Julie: One of my best junior high buddies joined up while we were in college. She was stationed for a while in San Antonio after her basic was over, while she was getting her MP training. Yup, little Nici was a big bad Marine MP. Kickin' butt and takin' names. (Hoo-Rah!) Later she became an elementary school teacher, a manager of a home for autistic adults, the worship leader at her church (jeez, sound like anyone we know?), and a wife and Mom. But I'll always think of her as the Kenny Loggins freak who could quote Monty Python with the best of 'em and never failed to crack me up. If Brett can find a buddy half as cool as her while he's serving, he'll be in very good hands.

These days, the military ain't quiet, especially the Marines. You're very brave to be enlisting now that's a commitment many aren't willing to take, but you are. We'll be thinking of you and praying for you, as well as for all the military personnel at home and abroad. May you become wiser and stronger for the effort.

We love you and we're proud of you, Brett. Once a Marine, always a Marine.

Semper Fi.

Best wishes from Cella, Julie and all the Broads

PS to Mrs. ParkerJulie just wants to make sure you know that it's a very rare Marine who comes home from boot camp without a touch of the potty-mouth. So, if Brett lets a few choice words slip out, don't worryit'll pass with time. Don't go running for the soap too quickly! ;o)

Thanks to Shine in NC for the beautimous picture of Brett that's gonna keep more than one Broad up nights!
