The Finals, pt. 1: This Was the Night May 20, 2003 They called it the Finals. But there was nothing final about that night. That was the night we saw the birth of a superstar. After five months watching him grow before our eyes, it all came together. That night, we saw the future. That night, we heard him sing a Clay Aiken song for the first time. Not a cover of someone else's song that he had to make his own. An original song that was his own. We now had nothing to compare him to, no context to put him in. It was just Clay. Clay showing us just the beginning of all he had to give. The suit.
The profile.
The arm.
The hand.
The mic.
The reach.
The eye... um, well, you know.
The deep knee bend.
The beauty.
The joy.
Yes, he sang his face off.
And he was a star.
Some were unable to see it.
But he could laugh at them.
Because he'd just announced to the world that he was Clay Aiken and he wasn't going anywhere.
