Basic Voting Tips

Voting tips from Sardonicus of the Peoples Republic of Clay For newbies and oldbies alikeprint and distribute to the newly Clayverted! Even if your fingers are mere nubs, you may pick up a tip. Also, please check the tips on the previous page for double-fisted dialing with two phones.

Red Phone
1) The phone number changes every week. You MUST use the correct number. It always starts 1-866-436570x. The x is the order of the contestant during any given show and is the number you need to get by watching the show. If you don't want to watch the show you can get the number at www.claytonaiken.com as soon as the number is announced.

2) They actually open the phone lines earlier than they tell you. You can start calling as soon as the last person sings. You will get a busy signal at first. This is what the redial button is for.

3) You can vote as many times as you want from as many phones as you want. Working two phones with limited busy signals, I can make 100 calls in just under 9 minutes.

4) You don't need to listen to the whole message. Once you hear "Thank you," hang up and dial again. For those of you dying to know the message, here it is: "Thank you for voting for contestant x. Watch American Idol tomorrow night on Fox, sponsored in part by AT&T Wireless." Wasn't that a rich and fulfilling experience?

5) Resist the temptation to call other people's lines. Every vote matters (and all the messages are the same.) [Editors Note: For Clays sake, dont split votes. Instead of removing Ruben, 100 votes for Kim might actually remove Clay. Too, too risky, folks.]

6) There is no charge to call, though if you call on a cell phone, you are charged for your minutes.

7) You cannot call from pay phones. [So I discovered last week. Boo, hiss.]

8) If you can only offer Clay 15-20 minutes of your time, don't make it in the first half hour. You'll get too many busy signals to rack up the votes! There's also usually a surge around 10 pm EDT/9 pm CDT when the Central Time Zone goes into cell phone evening rates. Absolute best time to make calls: 10:20-11:00 EDT/9:20-10:00 CDT. Almost no busy signals. My 100-call rate drops to about 7 minutes during this period.
