Small Wonder

At the concert in Pala when Clay was setting up the TV medleys part of the show, he brought up a favorite show of his as a kid (and incidentally one of mine), "Small Wonder."

Clay went on to say that he had a huge crush on the star of the show, Vickie, the robot girl.

Needless to say, I let out a loud squeal and cheer for this silly show that made such an impression our childhoods.

Now I know that even amongst people my age, "Small Wonder" isn't well known. After all, it was a low budget sitcom back in the 80's about a 10 year old robot girl. It now appears on lists of the worst sitcom ever, but for those of us who were kids in the 80's, it's a goofy, yet fond memory.

Brief synopsis:
Small Wonder was on the air from 1985-1989.

The father, an engineer for a robotics company, created a childlike robot (Vickie) to help assist handicapped children. He brought her home to "live and mature" with his own family. The family kept her identity a secret and tried to pass her off as their adopted daughter.

Vickie had super-human strength and speed with AC outlets under her arms and an access panel in the back.

She was incapable of emotion, spoke in a monotone voice and interpreted commands literally. (Of course over the show's run she became more human-like as she learned the appropriate responses).

Vickie stood for V.I.C.I. Voince Input Child Identicant. It seems like back in the mid-80's there were a string of robot-child characters. Who here remembers the movie, D.A.R.Y.L. (Data Analyzing Robot Youth Lifeform)? I loved that movie when I was a kid!

All this talk about humanlike robots has me thinking what if we were somehow able to create a Clay robot!?!?
